Rodeo Dental Sponsors IDEA Frontier -- Sophomores Take The LEAP!
Thirty of IDEA Frontier Brownsville's most talented sophomores are bound in for University of California, LA in July to participate in the annual and transformative LEAP Week. This extraordinary opportunity immerses students in an advanced academic curriculum, meetings with all-star public speakers and grants them valuable tools that will push them to become the invaluable leaders of tomorrow.Brimming with eagerness to meet groundbreaking speakers and pave a road to success, IDEA Frontier Brownsville students gathered together along with their sponsor, Rodeo Dental's Co-founder, Dr. Zarrabi and his team to be congratulated before their trip to this life-changing event. New LEAP hopefuls had the opportunity to hear from their Senior peers, who took part in UCLA's 2018 LEAP Week. One of the Seniors present was Daniela, who spoke highly of her trip to LA back in 2018, stating, "Now I know that I am for sure prepared to take on college and that I'll thrive being around new people."Daniela's mother, Karla, praised her daughter's growth and increased sense of responsibility after her 2018 trip, stating, "I did see a change, a big change. She was very excited about college and did see the picture, the real picture." Karla's son, Sebastian, will be experiencing his first plane-ride and taking part in LEAP Week this July, following in his sister's footsteps. When asked what he expected to gain from his experience, Sebastian replied, "A good person in a community doesn't leave because there are no opportunities, but they come back and they make [new] opportunities, so that's what I hope to gain through this experience." LEAP Week's positive impact on IDEA's students drew in the Rio Grande Valley's Executive Director, Jill Dominguez, previously a principal at IDEA Frontier. When asked if she had noticed a change in the Seniors she once oversaw, Jill further drove LEAP's importance, stating, "The change is significant. [LEAP Week] really helped the seniors be leaders, even on campus, this last year. That is the biggest difference we've seen in the kiddos. These kids will come back and be the leaders of our senior class. It helps set the culture of the whole school."As a token of their gratitude, the IDEA Team presented Dr. Zarrabi with a LEAP Week picture collage of the previous students he sponsored back in 2018, drawing smiles from both students and the Rodeo Team Members who attended. Humberto Valdes stressed the fact that without sponsorship, only one out of the 30 students would be able to take part in LEAP's prestigious program as 60%-80% of the student body is in financial need.Once the speeches came to a close, hugs were exchanged and thanks were said, Dr. Zarrabi opened the floor to all IDEA students in the room, asking the seasoned Seniors to provide insight into their experience at UCLA including their favorite speaker (favorites being Paula Abdul and Daniel Franzese from Mean Girls), what they learned during their workshops and what their first plane ride was like. New parents to LEAP sat and listened with both pride and anticipation for their children, one of these proud parents voiced hope for her young daughter, mentioning that, "She will have more opportunities to keep going forward and become someone really special. She'll be more motivated to pursue a long-term career. She is very excited...and we will continue encouraging her to keep pressing ahead."As the event drew to a close, students, parents and IDEA staff mingled, brought together by the shared feeling of hope, and the promise of an incredible journey only a chosen few have the joy of experiencing. A final question was brought to Dr. Zarrabi before the group dispersed, what brought him to the path of success he experiences today? Dr. Zarrabi responded with one final statement for the juniors of IDEA, "Without a mentor...maybe I wouldn't have ended up in the right path. When things don't always go right how do you roll through that? How do you turn things around? That's the kind of stuff that you're going to learn that's going to change and inspire you to really make the difference you want to make."Click here to view the Rodeo Dental profile...

Edmonton farmer seeks conservation easement to secure land’s future, prevent development
By Albert DelitalaMay 26, 2019An Edmonton farmer is working to protect his land from development in order to ensure that its forests and fields remain for future generations.Doug Visser’s 233-acre property in the northeast corner of the city has produced a range of crops for Edmontonians for decades. It also includes 73 acres of old-growth forest, the largest amount within the city limits.“We’ve done really well with growing vegetables and selling most of them locally,” said Visser, whose family first bought the land in the 1950s. “As a result of that realization of the merits of this land, we’ve decided that it’s worth keeping for a long time — forever.”Visser is working with the Edmonton & Area Land Trust to get a conservation easement on the title of the land, which would require future owners to maintain its forests and farmland.“It’s an important milestone for Edmonton to have a place like this conserved inside of the city limits,” said Rebecca Ellis, a conservation manager with the land trust. “It’s part (of) other groups’ initiatives to see the river valley as a whole conserved, and this is an important bend in the river.”The land is used by the Edmonton Native Healing Centre for ceremonies and is also home to Lady Flower Gardens, which affords homeless people and others in need access to a community garden. Riverbend Gardens farms the land to supply farmers markets in Edmonton as well. The property also serves as a haven for wildlife and a natural escape for people, according to Harvey Voogd, who is a board member of the North Saskatchewan River Valley Conservation Society.“It’s a prime example of why Edmontonians love the river valley,” Voogd said. “It’s a ribbon of green going to the city, a place not only for us as people to relax and recreate but also for animals and other creatures and flowers and plants to grow.”The Edmonton & Area Land Trust, which is a registered charity, is collecting donations to pay for lawyer and appraisal fees connected to the conservation easement.“I’m thinking about the future of the citizens of Edmonton and the world who are learning to appreciate the value that comes with land that can produce food and the recreational value of forested areas and addressing issues of climate change with special areas like this,” Visser said. The lifelong farmer and the charity hope to secure the land’s future by the fall.See the full article here....

CentreCourt and Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam are Proud to Unveil Indigenous Art Mural
Phillip Cote's 'The Original Family' brings colour, history and meaning to Garden District.CentreCourt is thrilled to present 'The Original Family', a work of indigenous art created by renowned artist and educator, Phillip Cote. First proposed by Ward 13 Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam, the mural graces the south façade at Grid Condos, CentreCourt's 50-storey tower at Dundas and Jarvis."Councillor Wong-Tam asked us to consider an artistic treatment of Grid's south facade," recalls Mitch Gascoyne, CentreCourt's VP of Development. "Considering the influence and impact that Indigenous culture and history has had on our country, the Councillor and CentreCourt believed that an Indigenous Art motif would be most appropriate. In May of 2018, we selected Phillip Cote to bring the project to life."Cote brought a number of ideas forward for the piece, and after a final decision was made, work began on 'The Original Family' in the fall of 2018. The completed mural depicts the Anishinaabe Creation story, beginning with The First Man (Waynaboozhoo) and The First Woman and their sacred union."It is a depiction of one of our oldest stories," says Cote. "The Anishinaabe Creation Story was brought down through oral traditions and pictographic images drawn on birch-bark scrolls."Cote worked on the mural for four months, using his contemporary style of Woodland Painting. "It has been an absolute pleasure working with Phillip," says Gascoyne. "And in equal measure, Councillor Wong-Tam's leadership and foresight on this project has been invaluable to us. CentreCourt is committed to honouring what is best in our communities, and 'The Original Story' is a vibrant reminder of the proud, strong indigenous foundation upon which we build.""It is exciting to welcome this substantial, Indigenous-centered mural work that speaks to the presence and rich history of Indigenous peoples in this location" said Councillor Wong-Tam.  "Phillip Cote is an award-winning artist whose work is widely respected.  I thank CentreCourt for their sponsorship of his work, and support of Indigenous placemaking.  The mural is located across from the new Indigenous Centre for Innovation & Entrepreneurship at 200 Dundas St. East.  I sincerely hope that these initiatives will move us closer to the goal of establishing an Indigenous Business District in this neighbourhood."Click here to view CentreCourt's profile....
